New Classroom Building for Foundation School

The Requirement

Hayes School is a Foundation School with media and arts status for over 1,500 pupils aged from 11 to 18 years.

The school had a requirement to expand its accommodation with eight new classrooms in time for the start of the new academic year. The additional teaching space would prevent the school having to continue to split departments over different parts of the existing building.

The construction programme would have to work within the school calendar and minimise disruption to teaching. The new building would also have to be in keeping with its attractive parkland setting.

The Solution

Yorkon manufactured a two-storey teaching block for the school's English department off site, comprising 22 12m long steel modules. The units were craned into position during school holidays to reduce disruption to staff and pupils.

Completed on time and on budget just three months after start of work on site, the building features large picture windows and a variety of claddings - timber, render and blue powder coated panel detailing - to add interest to the building envelope and help it blend into its picturesque location.

The project managers for the scheme were John Pelling & Partners, and the concept architects were PCKO Architects.
